The School Resource Officer Program is a collaborative effort by police agencies, certified law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents, and the community to offer law related educational programs in the schools in an effort to reduce crime, drug abuse, violence, and provide a safe school environment for all of our children.
The School Resource Officers' (SRO's) primary role is to function as a problem solver and liaison between the community, educators, and law enforcement/public safety specialist. Through these efforts the SRO has been able to effectively decrease the volume of reported criminal activity in the school community while increasing the level of positive interaction between the police department and the student population.
Originally funded in part by a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, the financial cost of the program is currently shared between the Williamsport Bureau of Police and the Williamsport Area School District.
The Williamsport Bureau of Police currently has (2) officers assigned to the Williamsport Area School District: Sgt. Jody Miller and Officer Thaddaeus Trafford. Both officers have completed the 40 hours School Resource Officer training provided by NASRO (National Association School Resource Officers).
The SRO office can be reached at 323-8411 Ext. 60603.
